While it took two days, Gov. Mifflin earned a big win over Boyertown on Saturday.

With the Mustangs leading by 35 points at halftime, the game was suspended on Friday night due to lightning.

Play resumed Saturday morning with the start of the second half, and Gov. Mifflin cruised to a 35-16 win over the Bears in a non-league football game at Shillington. “We played really well,” Mustangs coach Jeff Lang said.

“Offensively, we executed.” Gov. Mifflin dominated with its rushing attack, as nine different players combined for 293 yards on 49 carries. Junior Grady Garner led the way, rushing for 154 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries. “We’re just capable of just slamming it down their throats,” Garner said about the rushing attack. “Four yards and a cloud of dust.

The Mustangs’ defense slowed Boyertown, as the Bears recorded just 95 yards. Fullback Cole Yesavage was responsible for 93 of those yards. The senior had 77 yards rushing on 13 carries and recorded two catches for 16 yards. “Defense played outstanding,” Lang said. “They kept them in check.”

After a 32-minute lightning delay just before the opening kickoff Friday, Gov. Mifflin opened the scoring with a 6-yard touchdown run from quarterback Javien Pletz in the first quarter. The junior finished with 35 yards rushing on six carries and was 1-for-2 passing for 20 yards. “They controlled the line of scrimmage,” Lang said about his offensive line. “If we can control the line of scrimmage, it’s going to be a good night for us.”

The Mustangs added to their lead less than two minutes later, as Garner broke loose for a 44-yard touchdown run. The ensuing two-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful, giving Gov. Mifflin a 13-0 lead. “I just came in ready,” Garner said. “I got to thank my O-line for everything.”

Gov. Mifflin extended its lead just over a minute later when linebacker Brandon Jones blocked a punt deep in Boyertown territory and defensive end Stewart Janowski jumped on the loose ball in the end zone for a touchdown. Running back Reese Hohl scored on the ensuing two-point conversion, giving the Mustangs a 21-0 lead with just over five minutes remaining in the first quarter. “We just played with a swagger,” Garner said. “We’re really high on the confidence scale right now.”

Garner added to that lead with two more touchdowns, scoring on runs of 25 and 18 yards, to give the Mustangs a 35-0 lead heading into the half. After a 30-minute lightning delay during halftime, the game was suspended. “He’s gotten so much better from last year,” Lang said about Garner. “He’s running forward. He’s running with his shoulder pads in front of him.”

Play resumed on Saturday morning with a bang, as Boyertown senior Cade Sennott opened the second half with an 85-yard kick return touchdown to put the Bears on the board. Running back Jason Oakes scored on the two-point conversion to make it 35-8. “Returning that kickoff to open the second half was huge for us,” Boyertown coach Justin Konnick said. “It gave us some momentum we needed, gave us some confidence.”

The Bears scored again late in the third quarter when senior quarterback Ryder Gehris trotted into the end zone from 4 yards. Yesavage scored on the two-point conversion to make it 35-16. “They wanted to come back (Saturday) and make a difference,” Konnick said about his players. “It comes down to effort, and wanting to make a change and be better, and that’s what they did.”
