Berks Catholic scored on its first play from scrimmage and then three times on special teams later in the first half in a 64-6 non-league win over Boyertown Friday night at Memorial Stadium.
Nine players scored and Terrance Derr threw two touchdown passes for the Saints (3-1), who led 46-6 at the half in the first meeting between the teams. Jamie Moccia scored on a 12-yard run for the Bears (1-3).
Brandon George broke outside and down the left sideline for 75 yards on the Saints' first play, the only play run by the Saints during the first quarter.
Anthony Myers returned a punt 65 yards for a score after the BC defense stopped the Bears on their first try. Then Boyertown came back with a nine-play, 77-yard drive to cut the Saints' lead to 12-6.
But Abdul MacFoy ran back the ensuing kickoff 90 yards for a TD and Jaden Vazquez added a third special teams TD late in the second quarter when he blocked a punt from the 10 and recovered it in the end zone.
"Special teams," said Berks Catholic coach Rick Keeley. "We ran one play in the first quarter. Give credit to Boyertown. Our defense was on the field the rest of the quarter. Our team speed, I think, was too much for them."
The Saints racked up 400 total yards, including 141 through the air on 6-for-8 passing by Derr. The Bears totaled 245 yards, including 56 on the ground by quarterback Ayden Mathias, 50 by Dylan Robertson and 48 by Moccia.
"In the first half, we went up against one of the best teams in the state and we didn't back down," said Boyertown coach T.J. Miller. "We shot ourselves in the foot. You can't fall behind 24-0 against a team like that.
"(Mathias) had us on our heels for a long time," said Keeley. "We finally caught up. We figured it out."
