Boyertown pulls out win with Hail Mary pass

There isn't much history between Boyertown and Norristown on the football field, but the two teams played one that will be remembered for a very long time, thanks to a 50-yard Hail Mary touchdown on an untimed down that gave the Bears a 20-15 win in a Pioneer Athletic Conference Liberty game at Memorial Stadium Friday night.

Jerry Kapp was on the receiving end of quarterback Ayden Mathias' heave, allowing Boyertown to avenge a loss to the Eagles in their very first meeting a season ago.

"To be honest, that's the farthest I've ever thrown a ball in my life," said Mathias of the pass that traveled about 60 yards in the air.

"Coming out of the huddle, I told Ayden to buy some time, let us get down there and just throw it up as far as you can, and that's exactly what he did," said Kapp. "He rolled out left, threw across his body, across the field, right to me. I high-pointed the ball and was happy to be in the end zone."

Kapp caught three passes for 92 yards, putting him in second place on the school's all-time receiving yards list. With at least one game left for the Bears (3-6, 3-2), he needs four more yards to surpass the record of 1,197 set by Brandon Mason from 1998-2000.

Mathias had 187 yards passing, including an 85-yard TD to Jamison Moccia in the first quarter, and scored on a fourth-down plunge from 1 yard out to make it 14-0 in the second.

Norristown (2-7, 1-4) had taken a 15-14 lead with 40 seconds left, scoring a touchdown and converting the two-point conversion.

The Eagles twice had interceptions on Boyertown's final, game-winning drive, but both were wiped out by penalties. The teams combined for 33 penalties for 269 yards.
