BEASLEY BEATS BEARS; ROBERTS STREAK AT 28

BY RICH ZIEMBA READING EAGLE

9/20/1985 BOYERTOWN PA

So far this year, as tailback Mike Beasley goes, so goes the Owen J Roberts football team.

Beasley had  his third 100 yard game for the 3-0 Wildcats Friday night, carrying them to a 20-9 comeback victory over Boyertown in the Ches Mont League.

With Roberts starting quarterback Mike Caffrey out, the Wildcats overcame a three point deficit at halftime to beat the Bears at Boyertown.

Much of the comeback was carried by Beasley – with some help from the Roberts defense, which shut out the Bears in the second half.

Beasley gave Roberts its first lead at 12-9 with 11:56 left on a 1 yard dive.  Charlie Degenhart’s placement made it 13-9.

The touchdown culminated a nine play, 45 yard drive during which Beasley carried on every play.  And Beasley set up the drive by returning a punt 37 yards.

After Boyertown twice had failed to threaten offensively, Roberts took over on its nine.  Beasley took the next play 67 yards to the Boyertown 24.  The play was designed to go off tackle, but Beasley bounced outside and flashed down the sideline.  Brian Muscleman’s tackle prevented him from going all the way.

Roberts scored seven plays later on an 11 yard, fourth and nine pass from backup quarterback Dave Strock to split end Dave Cisik to go up 20-9.

Roberts linebacker Mike Giorgio ended Boyertown’s hopes by intercepting reserve quarterback Keith Grim on the next play with less than two minutes left.

It was Giorgio’s second takeaway.  In the second quarter, he scored Roberts first touchdown by stealing the ball from starting quarterback Chris Mackey and going 66 yards.

Beasley, a 6-1, 180 pound junior, finished with 167 yards on 32 carries, giving him 582 yards on the season – an average of 194 a game.  The victory extended Roberts unbeaten streak to 28 games and put the Wildcats at 2-0 in the league.  Boyertown dropped to 0-2, 1-2.

“In the first half we made a lot of mistakes,” said Roberts coach Hank Bernat, “and Boyertown was playing with a lot of emotion.

“In the second half, we started blocking, and Mike ran the ball very tough.  That long run down the sideline took us out of a big hole.”

The Bears had taken a 7-0 lead on Eric Irey’s 1 yard dive with 7:21 left in the first half.  The score was set up by Joe Dobry’s interception of a tipped pass by Caffrey, which Dobry carried 5 yards to the Roberts 29.

Four minutes later, Giorgio scored his 66 yard touchdown, but on a two point conversion attempt, Beasley’s halfback option pass intended for Cisik was out of the end zone.

The Bears scored a safety with one second left in the half when Strock was tackled in the end zone.  On the play before, a second and 10 at the Wildcat’s one, Caffrey severely injured his ankle on a quarterback sneak and did not return.

“In the second half,” Bernat said, “we just decided we were going to take the ball right at them.”

And with Beasley running the ball, the Wildcats did just that.

“They just kept pounding at us,” said Boyertown coach Don Grim.  “They just gave it to Beasley and let him find the opening.  He’s an excellent back, and at times we weren’t able to compete with him one on one.”

TROJANS DROP BEARS, 14-6

BY MIKE DRAGO READING EAGLE

POTTSTOWN PA 9/28/1985

Pottstown’s win over Boyertown Saturday night should serve as proof that the final score of a football game sometimes is meaningful as weather forecasts.

The Trojans got their first Ches Mont League victory by beating the Bears 14-6, but there is no way it was an eight point ball game.  The final margin could have been three or four times that.

“The game should have been out of hand by halftime,” said Pottstown coach Dan Weller.

Weller wasn’t blowing smoke.  It could have been  an early knock out.  Instead, the butterfingered Trojans (1-1-1 CM, 2-1-1 overall) insisted on keeping it close by dropping at least three potential touchdown passes.

Making matters more deceiving was that the Bears (0-3, 1-3) scored with just six seconds remaining, Keith Grim lofting a Doug Flutie like prayer into the end zone, virtually up for grabs.  Mark Moyer leaped with a defender for the ball, juggled on the way down, then clutched the ball as he hit the turf.

That was the Boyertown offense folks.

“We just couldn’t get untracked,” said Boyertown coach Don Grim, whose team managed just 54 yards on 35 rushes and just 146 total offense.

Once again, Pottstown did most of its talking on defense.  The Trojans, in an active 5-2, didn’t give an inch up the middle and were quick enough to cut off any outside activity.

“We were just not poking any holes in the line,” said Don Grim.  “And they have excellent linebackers.  They’re very quick and they were able to cut us off before we could turn the corners.”

Linebacker Randy Douglass keyed the defense—and the offense, too.  He accounted for the first score when he stepped in front of a Chris Mackey pass in the left flat and raced 85 yards for a touchdown at 10:48 of the second quarter.

The lead could have been worse at that point, as Jason Jones had slipped behind the Boyertown secondary on Pottstown’s third paly, quarterback Greg Glenn hitting him perfectly at midfield.  But the ball slipped off Jones hands.

The lead could have been worse at that point, as Jason Jones had slipped behind the Boyertown secondary on Pottstowns third play, quarterback Greg Glenn hitting him perfectly at midfield.  But the ball slipped off Jones hands.

On the next Pottstown’s series, Glenn, throwing from midfield, found Jones breaking open inside the 20 for a possible touchdown.  Again, off the fingertips.

Pottstown surged ahead on its first drive of the second half, going 70 yards in six plays for a touchdown.  Douglass stirring 52 yard run to the 17 and Glenn’s 11 yard run set up Glenn’s 10 yard bootleg around right end for a 14-0 lead at 8:46 of the third quarter.

Pottstown continued to threaten, the best chance for another score coming early in the fourth quarter when Glenn connected with John Thorpe on a 45 yard pass and run.

But the Trojans, who later moved to the 5, failed on a fourth and goal from the 15.  Glenn found John Johnson in the right corner of the end zone.  Of course, you know what happened – the ball was dropped.
